International Driving Permits for Dutch Licence Holders

If you're planning to drive outside the EU with a Dutch driving licence, you may need an International Driving Permit (IDP). This document translates your licence into multiple languages and confirms which vehicles you’re qualified to drive.

An IDP is only valid when shown together with your Dutch driving licence. It cannot be used on its own, and your Dutch licence must still be valid for the IDP to be accepted.

Where You Need an IDP

You do not need an IDP to drive in EU or EFTA countries — your Dutch licence is sufficient. However, most non-EU countries require an IDP, especially if you plan to rent a car.

To check which countries require an IDP, visit the ANWB website (information in Dutch). There you'll find:

  • Lists of countries that require one
  • The types of IDPs available
  • Their costs and validity

How to Apply for an IDP

You can get an International Driving Permit at an ANWB shop in the Netherlands. You must:

  • Be registered in the Netherlands
  • Visit a shop in person (or authorize someone to go for you)
  • Bring your valid Dutch driving licence
  • Bring two passport photos that meet Dutch requirements

The IDP is usually issued within minutes. Learn more about the process or how to authorize someone on ANWB.nl (in Dutch).

Lost, Stolen or Expired IDP?

If your IDP is lost, stolen, or expired, you can reapply at an ANWB shop once you're back in the Netherlands. The same process applies — and yes, you can authorize someone else to handle it on your behalf.

Final Thoughts

An International Driving Permit can save you trouble abroad, especially in countries that don't accept Dutch licences on their own. But remember, Drive Dutch is not an official authority. For official questions or clarifications, always contact the Dutch government directly via netherlandsworldwide.nl/contact.
