Is Your Foreign Driving License Valid in the Netherlands?
Just moved to the Netherlands or planning a visit and wondering if you can drive with your current license? The rules vary depending on where your license was issued and your residency status.
Here’s a simplified overview, based on official information from RDW. Always refer to their website for full and up-to-date details.
1. License Issued in an EU or EFTA Country 🇪🇺
If your license was issued in an EU or EFTA country before you moved to the Netherlands:
- You can drive with categories AM, A1, A2, A, B, BE for 15 years from the issue date.
- You can drive with C1, C, D1, D, C1E, CE, D1E, DE for 5 years from the issue date.
- If your license is older than 15 years but still valid, you can drive for 2 years after registering in the Netherlands.
After these periods, you must exchange your license for a Dutch one.
2. EU/EFTA License Issued After You Moved to the Netherlands 🏠
If you received your EU/EFTA license after registering in the Netherlands:
- You cannot use it to drive in the Netherlands.
- You must exchange it via your local municipality.
3. License Issued Outside the EU or EFTA 🌍
If your license is from a non-EU/EFTA country:
- It’s valid for 185 days from the day you became a resident.
- After that, you’ll need a Dutch driving license.
- You may be able to exchange it, depending on your country. Otherwise, you’ll need to retake the CBR theory and practical exams.
- If your license uses unfamiliar categories, it’s recommended to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP).
Start your exchange application early to avoid being prohibited from driving once the 185 days pass.
4. Tourists Driving in the Netherlands 🧳
Are you visiting the Netherlands as a tourist?
- You can use your foreign driving license.
- If your license is from a non-EU/EFTA country and does not use A/B/C/D/E categories, it’s strongly recommended to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your national license.
